The Issue
Scientific research and advanced science education are often financially out of reach for many students. Mentorship for international competitions like ISEF or MIT THINK can cost upwards of $500–$2,000 per month. Prestigious research programs such as Lumiere, Crimson, and CCIR range from $2,800 to $8,900. Even online research papers and cheat sheets for core subjects are often locked behind expensive paywalls. With pre-college summer programs at universities like Harvard and Columbia exceeding $5,000, many students face an unfair playing field in accessing quality scientific education.
Founded in January of 2023, Project Cleris (Collaborating Learning Engagement and Resources In Science) is breaking down these financial, racial, and gender-based barriers by providing zero-cost, high-quality research resources for students worldwide.
Founding story
Sabrina Huang, the founder, executive director, and website developer of projectcleris.org, grew up in a low-income neighborhood of NYC where access to science opportunities was scarce. Despite these challenges, her passion for research led her to a research position at NYU, where she explored model organisms using Bioinformatics. Experiencing firsthand the barriers that many students face in accessing research opportunities, she founded Cleris to make science education and research mentorship accessible to all—regardless of their financial background.
Science should be a field of curiosity and innovation, not exclusivity. Cleris is creating a future where any student with a passion for science can access the resources, mentorship, and support they need to thrive.
